The plan for the afternoon was simple: play a game of football, then sit down and talk. By the end, the talking lasted longer than the match.

Fortify, our men's wellbeing pillar, was created because many young men carry pressure in silence. They are often told to "be strong", to provide and to keep their struggles to themselves. Our sessions offer something different: a space where strength includes honesty.

Why we start with sport

Sport breaks the ice. It builds trust between players, burns off nervous energy and gives everyone a shared experience to talk about. After the final whistle, the circle forms naturally.

This week's conversation covered anger, money stress and what it means to be a good role model for younger brothers and cousins. Our facilitators guided the discussion, but the most powerful moments came from the young men themselves.

"On the pitch we pass the ball to each other. Off the pitch we should do the same with our problems."

Building lasting habits

The Iron & Wellness Initiative combines these men's circles with fitness, nutrition and practical skills. Participants set small personal goals, from sleeping better to managing money, and check in on each other's progress at the next session.

If you know a group of young men who would benefit from Fortify, get in touch and we will arrange a visit.
