Two years ago I was the student sitting at the back of an SIU workshop, arms folded, sure that none of it applied to me. By the end of the term I had joined the follow-up sessions, because they were the only place I felt I could be honest.
When I finished school, I asked how I could help. Now I am part of the volunteer team. I help set up sessions, run games that get people talking, and sit with students who want to talk one on one.
The best moment is when someone who said nothing all afternoon comes up at the end and says "thank you, I needed that".
Volunteering has taught me patience and how to really listen. If you are thinking about joining, do it. You do not need to have everything figured out. You just need to show up and care.
